CANARY

Pattern

Hook: Mustad 3399 wet fly hook, no. 4 to 2/0 (this one is on a no. 2) – can also be tied on bronze long-shank streamer hooks or traditional black single salmon hooks. The 3399 is my personal favorite for marabou flies.

Thread: Red

Tail: None

Body: None (the marabou covers the hook shank)

Wing: Wound in order, back to front – hot pink marabou, orange marabou, yellow marabou.

Note:

An underwing of a half-dozen or so strands of crystal flash or flashabou are sometimes used by some tiers on this and other marabou streamer-style flies. These materials are also sometimes used as a topping. I have experimented with them in various combinations and have found that these stiffer, synthetic materials takes away from the naturally supple “pulsing” action of the marabou feathers and so I have eliminated them from use in my flies. The extra visual “flash” is probably unnecessary at any rate – it’s not like these flies lack visibility.~Ray
